Characteristics of Culture Shock

Honorable ones Mrs. Kusmiati, our speech Lecturer, My friends and all of the audiences.

Before I begin to give a speech, I would like to invite you to thank to Allah the Almighty, who has given us Mercy and Blessing, so we can meet together in this blessing place. And also I don’t forget to deliver shalawat and salam to our prophet Muhammad SAW, who has brought us from the darkness , so we are always in the right way.

Have you ever heard about Culture Shock?
What is it?
Culture Shock isn’t a clinical term or medical condition. It’s simply a common way to describe the confusing and nervous feelings a person may have after leaving a familiar culture to live in a new and different culture. When you move to a different place, you’re bound to changes a lot of changes. That can be stimulating, but it can be also overwhelming. You may feel sad, anxious, frustrated, and want to go home.

When you go to a new place, such as a new country or even a new city, you often enter  a culture that is different form the one you left. Sometimes your culture and the new culture are similar. Other times, they can be very different, and even contradictory.  The differences between cultures can make it very difficult to adjust the surroundings.

Then what are the characteristics Culture Shock? Here are some cahracterictics of Culture Shock :
1.       You will think negatively about your new culture and begin to compare your culture and the new culture.  Then you’ll think that your culture is better and the new culture is worse.  Then you’ll see the new culture from a negative perspective.
2.       You don’t want to be around people who are different from you.  You try to judge them by their appearances and style.
3.       You begin to be frustrated, and temperamental for even a very little problem. You are frustrated because you cannot follow the new culture. You become lazy to communicate with others and feel unconfident.
4.       You feel sad and lonely among a community.
5.       You feel sick. You often suffer cold, diarrhea, etc.
6.       Extreme homesickness

These difficult feelings may tempt you to isolate yourself from your surroundings and dismiss the new culture. It’s best not to withdraw like this. Of you stay calm, observe and learn, and keep things in perspective, you’ll probably find that your difficulties will pass.

So, how do you deal with the frustration and fears you may be having? How can you begin to feel comfortable in your surroundings?
1.       Learning the Language
Depending from where you come from and where you are now, you may or may not have trouble with the native language. It’s a good idea to become comfortable with the language as soon as you can.

2.       Knowing what to expect
Learning things about your new environment will help you become more comfortable. School is a great pace to do this.

3.       Coping with teasing
Your accent might be different from everybody else’s. Your clothes may also be different from those around you. Sometimes it can be really difficult being different. You need to learn the style in your new environment.

Remember, the key of getting over your culture shock is understanding the new culture and finding a way to live comfortably within it while keeping true to the parts of your culture that you value.
